New House Tour: Master Bedroom

Back with another room to show! This room seriously transformed over night, literally.

Did I ever tell you guys our entire house was tan before we moved in? When they did the flip before putting it on the market they took a sprayer to the entire interior of the house. Every baseboard, trim, wall, ceiling, door... tan. In other words, blah. Tan can totally be great, especially when paired with white. So first things first before moving in we did a lot of white painting. All the doors, hallway trim, master bedroom baseboards, and thanks to Joel's brother Josh the master bedroom and hall bathroom ceilings! It's definitely not all that NEEDS to be white, but it was all we wanted to accomplish before moving in. And what a difference this has made. Having the nice crisp white up against the tan is SO refreshing and pretty, I love it. But clearly, the master bedroom and hall bathroom are no longer tan! As you can see... they're grey! We went with the same grey color in the master bedroom and hall bathroom and we are in love with it. It's dark and rich and one would think it would totally close in the space BUT as you can also see here we've got lots of natural light coming in through our whole house... so that helps the spaces feel way more open and airy. Not to mention the vaulted ceilings, which most older and smaller bedroom homes do not have. Those help a ton too.

So anyway, here it is. Our dark grey master bedroom! The reason I said this room transformed over night is because right after we moved in I hung a collage of white frames on that main wall, and it's been like that ever since. Here's a quick phone snapshot before it came down. I liked it, but it always felt too cutesy and light and bright in comparison to the vibe of the rest of the room. Not what we were going for. I also had started adding more industrial/wood elements around the rest of the room, so I had to find a way to incorporate that same style over on the main wall. Needless to say the white frame collage came down, and moved to another spot in the room (see below). And what went up we are a LOT happier with. Partly because it balances out the rest of the room so well, but MAINLY because it's all stuff we gathered from around the house that we already had. Stuff that hadn't yet found a home in our new home. I've said it once and I'll say it again, I will always be a big fan and supporter of holding on to various wall prints, artwork, pillows, and decor items (IF you've got the space for them). Because they might not work in one space and be perfectly right for another, you just never know. And here's a perfect example of that because this little wall upgrade didn't cost a penny, or even a trip outside the home. It took 30 minutes and totally completed the space.

You all remember Duke, the deer head from our last living room. I've dreamed of putting him up against a colorful wall and he finally has a home now. We made the wooden sign using wood we found at my grandpa's house up north, the feather is a drawing we found at Goodwill, and the wooden framed piece is a vintage landscape photograph that's mounted on wood, so it's like a box frame. So. cool. Oh and the white frame on the bottom is the envelope from my friends wedding invitation that has our name and very first address together written in a fun font, just a little way to remember our first home.
We switched dressers from the one we used in our last bedroom to this mid-century guy that we picked up on the side of the road, remember this post about that? I wanted to use it in our last bedroom but the shape and size wouldn't have worked in there, now up against this wall it works perfectly.
Here's a nice shot of the other side of the room. You can see how the door leads out into the hallway and the bathroom entrance. Ignore the bathroom style, we haven't touched that room and really don't plan to for quite some time. It feels like a hotel and we don't necessarily mind it for now.
And here's Joel photobombing. I love my roommate.
And remember that collage of white frames? It moved to this little half wall and is much happier there. It's a combination of pictures of us dating, engaged, on the wedding day, honeymooning, and one more recent shot. Plus our wedding invitation and a fun little love print. I love how the wall tells a story, and show a little bit of our history together. The master bedroom is one place where it's totally appropriate to plaster your own faces everywhere, right? : )

Basically, I love this room. It's definitely my favorite spot in the whole house. Not because of the decor or for the...ahem... obvious reasons. But because it's where Joel and I have the best conversations. It's where we laugh uncontrollably and have way too many tickle fights. It's where we say hello and goodbye, and where we spend time in prayer. It's the place that I know at the end of every day no matter what's happened outside those walls we fall asleep knowing we're right where we should be. I wanted to create a space where we feel at home, safe, loved... a space that reflects us. THAT, no matter how big or small, is what every master bedroom should be.
